2017 Mental Health Week Awards and Michael Firestone  Memorial Scholarship nominations now open!

The ACT Mental Health Week Awards open officially opened on Tuesday 16 May 2017.  There are six Awards and a Scholarship.  

The awards are: Promotion Prevention and Early Intervention Award; The Mental Health Carer Award; The Mental Health Volunteer Award; the Mental Health Consumer Award; the Reciprocity Award AND the David Perrin Award which is presented in conjunction with ACT Mental Health Consumer Network.

The nomination forms for the Awards are available for download from the Mental Health Week website. 

The Scholarship is the Michael Firestone Memorial Scholarship, a reimbursement worth up to $500 (up to 2 scholarships are awarded each year) recognising mental health consumers who are furthering their education by providing scholarship(s) to cover general education expenses such as computers, course texts and course fees.  The nomination form for the Scholarship can be downloaded on the following link.

New Submissions

The Network previously held consultations with consumers to formulate a response to inquiries on Employment and Disability and provision of services for people with psychosocial disability under the NDIS.

Network training videos now on YouTube

Around the end of 2015, the Network commissioned the creation of some video resources for the Self-Advocacy and Consumer Representation training program. The project involved the participation of many Consumer Representatives and has been used extensively in our training throughout 2016.

Recently, we created a YouTube channel to make available the training promotional videos, and got these videos uploaded.

Report: Engaging with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in culturally responsive ways

From August through to November 2015, the Network hosted Dianne Perkins, a student placement from the Australian Catholic University.

As part of her studies in Social Work for her degree, Dianne conducted a project for the Network which aimed to identify and examine culturally appropriate practices that the Network can use to actively engage with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who identify has having lived experience of mental illness.

The final report, titled “Engaging with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in culturally responsive ways: Building relationships and supporting social and emotional wellbeing” is now available for viewing and can be found on the Reports page under Publications menu.

1) International Human Rights Day forum – Video & Podcast

On 10 December, International Human Rights Day, the ACT Human Rights Commission held a discussion forum on the history of human rights in the capital. The panel included Hon. Michael Kirby AC CMG, Dr Tom Calma AO, and Professor Hilary Charlesworth AM. A video of the Hon. Michael Kirby's speech and a podcast of the discussion which aired on Radio National on 18 December are now available.
